The Animals Were Never Alone
a Choose Your Own Adventure Essay
by Maria Lepistö and the Animal Sound Society
“But language doesn’t need a voice!” You exclaim, “it can exists in written words, even if they are not spoken out aloud.”

With a distinct sneeze, she gracefully dodges a discussion of nominology. “Sure, but I still hear the voice of the author”

“What if the author is mute?”

“I will still hear her voice”

What she is trying to say is that the voice is social. As long as one can communicate, one has a voice. Sometimes, when she is alone, she speaks to herself. She likes the sound of her voice and she wants to be reminded that it still exists.
